So you want to try a thousand year old tree Puerh?

It will be very difficult to try an authentic one, for a few reasons:

1) A lot of "very ancient tree puerh" is wild varietals/yesheng, which really don't count. There's a reason these varietals were not domesticated: they're not as good for humans, they're not even puerh strictly speaking. Can be good in some cases, but never as good as standard varietal Puerh and actually 99% of the time they're actually pretty bad.

2) Fakes. Everywhere. Nearly almost always. There are very few people that can be trusted to make real 100% pure ancient tree tea (not blended with smaller trees), let alone a thousand year old tree.

3) Finally: it's impossible to tell the age for certain! All fixed numbers are essentially plucked out of a hat, and indeed serious tea people don't give tree age numbers as a certainty.

With all that said, it's possible to identify ancient tree and very ancient tree Puerh by tasting it, so it's not completely hopeless. But you can't trust any stories, only your mouth and mind. In the video below I explain how to taste for tree age, and after that is a simple comparison and deepening your experience by drinking the real stuff and comparing it to the rest.

The 2022 BangDong JiGushu Single King Tree is the most refined and oldest tree ever released (certainly by us, but likely by anyone else outside wealthy asian collector circles).

The hardest project we worked on so far

...and our most significant contribution to making available a type of puerh that was not available before.

Puerh.uk was founded based on an insight gained over a long practice of drinking puerh: “most puerh, even good puerh, should only be consumed after many years of aging“. And that's still almost always true.

However in the last 10 years there's a quality of Puerh that was never made before in history, and defies that seemingly immutable law above.

We call it "benchmark ancient tree" because it's what you can test other supposed "ancient trees" teas against, to check whether they're real or not.

In brief, this is the quality standard:

the oldest available trees are used, if possible as 1 single tree (no blending)

the varietal is standard puerh, not a wild one

the area is a classic puerh area

the picking is 1st spring pick (and there are no more than 2-3 picks each year)

the environment is clean, no pesticide fertiliser, etc.

the trees have never been cut down before, but have been left to grow undisturbed

This is the highest expression of Ancient Tree Puerh in a given garden, either a single tree, often extra tall (gaogan) or 100% pure ancient tree.

Besides being great to drink now, this is a tea you want at least a tong of (or as
much as you can afford) in your collection.

The 2012 CYH CangFeng Gedeng has strong and smooth taste similar to a very good old tree Yiwu (Gedeng is nearby, another of the 6 famous tea mountains), is rich and thick, has powerful aftertaste, complex aroma, and strong and high quality Qi, this could easily be priced twice as high and still be a deal.

This was really a lucky one, I was wandering about in a malaysian TCM shop with not much hopes and I stumbled upon this! Costs about half of modern Jingmai gushu, it's got 20 years of Malaysian dry storage... what else do you need?

The 2003 JingMai Ancient Tree Crab Feet Special Grade has got great sweetness, refined aromas, smoothness and a matching presently calming Qi.

In terms of older Puerh, we're receiving many compliments both in terms of taste (rich, clean, refined) and Qi (calming, strong) for the 1980s Strong Spring Leaf Puerh, an excerpt from a review from Nick M.:

"Brews a dark rosewood as you would expect, but with a refinement that I wasn’t prepared for. Full and round on the palate, with excellent persistence. And it brews and brews.
[...]
Now let me say that I’ve never been a shou fan but this is something else. This is simply wonderful: ‘joyful’ as Paolo says, which totally sums it up. It’s extremely comfortable, calming and completely delicious.

I particularly like them for 5-25yr old sheng puerh but people have reported using them for younger puerh, shou and other types of tea, making them perfect all-rounder. Traditionally processed strong-bodied Yiwu

Chen Yuan Hao (CYH) decided to make available to us a series of their big/old tree teas called Cang ("hidden" or "secret") made between 2007 and 2013, we've been really happy and bought a lot for ourselves to store long term, and now we can share some with you so you can take advantage of the much-lower-than-usual pricing too.

The 2008 CYH CangYi (Yiwu) combines both traditional processing and the softness of Yiwu big/old tree leaves: so you get a taste that's both strong bodied and "punchy", and yet very charmingly sweet as well.

Quality is so high that some people say it's made of ancient tree leaves and the mistake is understandable: there's little comparable to this quality in the period. What's most striking is how affordable this tea is and this together with its traditional processing and already great transformation (has been in CYH's own storage since production), make it a great candidate to buy a tong or a few to age.

Last week's release was the very remarkable 1980s Strong Spring Leaf Puerh (clean old sheng and shou blend, quite an experience).
We've also re-stocked 1997 Menghai Red Ribbon Special Order (Dry storage gentlemen, one of the oldest pure dried stored cakes you can get) and 2005 Puerh.uk Green Mark MengKu (mind-stopping Qi, powerful aromas).

Genuine, Clean, Rich 80s Puerh
In Taiwan, HK and China there are a lot of blends of various loose leaves puerh that are said to be anything from 1920s to 1960s.
Let's be serious: most of those are just shou puerh, usually from the 90s at best (2000s otherwise), often it's full of storage smells (wet storage) and the leaves were the worst of plantation terraces.
Genuine 1980s Puerh is really not that common, if you try this tea against some of what you may have lurking at home that was said to be much older you will see what I mean. And clean storage and strong spring leaves is even rarer.
This 1980s Strong Spring Leaf Puerh is a thick, rich, strong huigan, good durability, strong Qi, it drinks similar to a very clean old shou but with good power as you'd expect from a sheng puerh.

If you are looking for an old dry storage sheng puerh: The 1990s Mr Chen's Cang Yun Qing Zhuan is proper high quality sheng: smooth, complex, deep, well aged, thick, refined Qi.

And finally if you're into semi-aged gushu sheng puerh, you also don't want to miss the 2006 CHGT Yiwu Chawang Spring (Complex, ethereal-feeling, deep Qi, strong aftertaste, good durability: textbook old tree Yiwu as it was meant to be in the antique era, 1900-1950s).

In a recent chat with Daniel (the collector with the excellent hot/dry storage whose tea always sell out quick), I found out he has a couple boxes of the spring version of a very beloved and sold out cake: the 2006 CHGT Yiwu chawang autumn. We decided to offer some of this tea at much lower than its normal price in Taiwan (and much, much lower than China).

The 2006 CHGT Yiwu Chawang Spring is a great example of the early Yiwu boutique old trees cakes from Taiwan, and really the price is excellent for what you get. We have some tongs available for purchase as well, this is a great ager as well (all the antique teas and 50s red mark were yiwu old tree).

Super clean, complex, ethereal-feeling, deep Qi, strong aftertaste, good durability: textbook old tree Yiwu as it was meant to be.

It's many years customers asks me to offer teapots, but we've not done very much until now.
It would be easy to offer teapots of any age and let people figure out what's good and what's not.
But that's not our way, so instead we experimented at length with antique and newer Yixing and settled on a few categories which we believe represent exceptional value (that's to say: they make good tea, are chemical additive free and the price is reasonable for the quality).
The first of course were the Teapots by He Zhong Tai, and today we're also presenting older Yixing teapots in hongni (red clay), which can make a thicker, richer brew without losing complexity or refinement.

We have a few Antique Yixing Teapots available now, these early-mid 1970s Factory 1 yixing teapots are great for "first aging" sheng puerh (~5-15 year old) and also for older dry stored sheng puerh, like the 2001/2002 CYH Yiwu.

We have also restocked the glorious 2002 CYH Yiwu Pure Gushu (if you're even remotely interested in puerh, you need some of this).

Stumbled into a small "tea expo" in KL.
Pretty disappointing in terms of tea, I bought a very nice 60s Liu bao but besides that it was really full of mediocre to bad tea. Some cheap teaware, some interesting teapots, not much else.
I did however meet friends old and new and that was the nicest part of the day!

I've bought some DeHua cups during the last Taiwan Collector Experience and for how well they drink, they quickly became my favourites for "first aging" to "aged" puerh (that's to say anything from approx. 5 to 25-30 years old sheng puerh).

Antique DeHua cups are rarer than the usual JingDeZhen cups. JingDeZhen cups also have a problem with "fakes": I see on even reputable webshops tea cups sold as ming dynasty that I seriously suspect are actually Qing dynasty at best, if not even more recent reproductions.

We have a few genuine Ming Dynasty from DeHua Cups (at great pricing) on the website right now, it's unclear if we can buy more or not so if you're missing a good cup, this is your chance.

These cups are likely from early-mid Ming dynasty (not late) and may or may not be from a shipwreck, but there definitely isn't any of the negative salty taste that usually comes from such cups. On the contrary, the drinking experience is really excellent: slightly thicker texture and better aftertaste without muting.

We have also restocked 2013 Xiaguan Love Forever Paper Tong.
There are 2 last cakes for both 2021 manxiu huangshuan (uncultivated old trees) and 2018 yibi danzhu (single tree) in Bi Yun Hao Elite productions.

When I first drank the 2001 CYH Yiwu I was blown away by it, I devoured half a cake in 2 weeks and the more I drank it the more excited I got about it, really flawless, imagine a great 2010s or 2020s 100% pure ancient tree cake...but with over 20 years of perfect pure dry storage. that. can you actually imagine it? Another way... imagine a 80s-90s cake but completely clean, in some ways smoother and yet with a ton of power.
But alas, there were only 4 tongs available and they sold out very quick. I had to turn down requests for 2 more tongs. I was quite sad it was already over.

The source said he had the 2002 CYH Yiwu and that "quality is the same". I held my breath until I could try it in person. ...Phew! The first fateful taste revealed that it really is as good and in fact possibly even (slightly) better! And thankfully he has stock of this one!
Not a lot (and more than half has already been sold as tongs in pre-sale in the last few days), but enough to satisfy who wanted to buy the 01 and a few more of you.

I'm simply going to say that if you are serious about puerh, you need this, to drink now and as a friend to deepen your understanding of old tree and old puerh with as it ages

The sheer dominance of these teas over almost anything else made in 80s-90s and 2000s makes the 2002 Chen Yuan Hao Yiwu Pure Gushu one of the deepest, strong-and-smoothest, powerful aftertaste teas for a large amount of time in Puerh history.

Early old tree Yiwu cake

(Real) old tree Yiwu it's really where it's at, and when you get the chance to get such a cake with almost 25 years of aging already you really might want to snap it while it's available (it's very rare).
I've decided to release a few cakes of 1999 Mr Chen Menghai Da Ye Zheng Shan which ticks all boxes: very affordable for the quality, strong Qi, perfect dry storage, thick sweet taste, complex long-lasting aromas.
It's very hard to do better than this one for cakes of this age as most are plantation leaves (a higher level than this, 100% pure ancient tree, is even rarer).
A cake like this would not be pressed today (the leaves would be used to make several single estate productions instead), and if it somehow was the price would be higher than this.

I've been asked about Bingdao quite a lot lately, and there seems to be so much confusion and no wonders: the real thing is nearly impossible to find!
Even though CYH doesn't make this tea anymore, I've asked them to share a few cakes so that western tea lovers may be able to experience the real bingdao which is both 100% pure bingdao laozhai (old village, not wider bingdao area) and 100% pure ancient tree too.

2018 CYH BingDao is really elite young puerh: lovely strong taste, super aromatic, mind stopping ChaQi, endless aftertaste, long durability, the whole package. Eh, you try it and you'll know what I mean, the difference is pretty obvious. Tasting is believing indeed.
